A word about "folk art"
 |
| There
are several terms used to describe self-taught artists, including Folk, Naive, Outsider or Brut, Primitive and Visionary. While all styles are from the heart - pure and authentic - visionary art arises from the inner voice and is ruled more by the spiritual side of the artist. Oftentimes, but not always, the talent is discovered when the artist is older and after a catastrophic change in the artist's life. Catlyn O'Day Preston's art is visionary in that she had felt for some time she had the ability to paint. After a major change in her life she produced her first painting -- and hundreds more since. |

Cat
started painting in the early 1990s with no formal training but armed with
a
strong conviction that she could paint. Choosing acrylics, her first painting
included everything from her beloved Lake Superior to images of Nantucket (where
she and husband Rob were married) to her two Cocker Spaniels, Morgan and Tierney,
(little people with fur) who kept her company in her studio while the painting
evolved.
She began her second painting the minute she had finished the first --
her third painting, a portrait of a local favorite nightclub, was purchased
immediately by the club's owner. Since that time, she has commissioned and completed
well over 200 paintings for
home and business owners, as well as many landscape "memory paintings,"
so-called because they are rendered from memories of favorite places the artist
has lived or visited.

She has also been featured in numerous magazines and participated in juried art shows from Michigan to the East Coast. In addition, she has worked with Lenox Collections, Landauer Corporation, Bacova Guild, Country Home Magazine, Mead Corporation, Williamhouse-Regency, Landmark Stock Exchange, Bradford Exchange and Color Charts of San Diego. She has also been represented by Windward Gallery in Morehead City, North Carolina. Cat is also showing her work and producing Giclee prints through Gallery West, a subsidiary of Ben Franklin, in Marquette, Michigan. She produced the Christmas print "Marquette Christmas" which will be promoted by Gallery West for this coming Christmas. Any original image of Catlyn's may be produced as a Giclee print -- just call for information! The Prestons relocated to Anacortes, Washington in the beautiful Pacific Northwest in December, 2006 and most recently moved to LaConner which is on the same island, Fidalgo. The gorgeous panorama offers an endless new array of material worthy of new paintings -- watch for new selections coming soon! |
Buckley
and Clancy (thanks to Shorewood
Cocker Rescue) still keep her company and supply companionship during
long beach w-a-l-k-s (they know that word!)
for rejuvination and inspiration. They also tend to show up in paintings here
and there!
Her work has
evolved in the last decade and improves consistently with her signature attention
to detail.
Memory
